Wills and Legacies

Helping Stroud Hospitals League of Friends is helping others…

For most people, a will ensures that those important to us in our lives – partners, family members, friends and organisations – benefit when we are no longer alive.

A gift to Stroud Hospitals League of Friends in your will helps us to be there when needed, now and in the future. The League is a registered charity which supports the two hospitals, community projects and the health and welfare of the local people.

How Stroud Hospitals League of Friends use gifts in wills

Gifts come in all sizes from small personal donations to the value of an estate (or share of) being left to us. Every £1 is highly valued and wisely spent.

We focus our resources in a way that enhances and protects services, through refurbishment and provision of state-of-the-art equipment which would not otherwise be provided by the NHS. Previous legacies from generous and thoughtful Stroud residents have played a major part in the significant support we have been able to give.

Gifts to charities are exempt from Inheritance Tax

Any charitable donations written into your will are not considered part of your estate for Inheritance Tax purposes. What’s more, your estate will benefit from a reduced 36% Inheritance Tax rate should you leave 10% of your net estate to a charity.

How to put a gift in your will

If you haven’t written your will yet, firstly decide what kind of gift you wish to leave to family and friends. Then think about what you would like to give Stroud Hospitals League of Friends. You can write your will yourself, but you should get advice from a solicitor if your will isn’t straightforward. You need to get your will formally witnessed and signed to make it legally valid.

If you already have a will you can simply add a ‘codicil’, which is supplementary to the will, making changes and additions to part of that will. You must sign a codicil and get it witnessed in the same way as witnessing a will. There’s no limit on how many codicils you can add to a will.

You can donate:

  • a fixed amount
  • an item
  • what’s left after other gifts have been given out

Find out about Donating

The League of Friends would be unable to enhance and protect the services of the two hospitals or provide healthcare support in the community without the generous support of the people of Stroud and surrounding area. For us to continue in our work and influence the future security of the hospitals, we rely upon a steady stream of donations.
